CENTRAL DIVISION 0805 - GRADE CHAMPIONSHIPS, CALGA

Saturday 5 July 2008

Conditions: Perfect!

Racing was tough from the get-go in A Grade with plenty of testing little surges on the first lap. As a result the bunch fractured and regrouped many times before the final group of 8 made their mark and left the remainder in their wake. In the end it was the same young riders that took the honours at Wootton who filled the top four places, with the new Central Division Champion for 2008 being Beau Harper from Manning Valley CC. Beau won in a tight finish from Owen Belton, Ben Hill and the ever improving Sam Layzell

A stong opening 10km from Andrew Hellmich, Elliot Stephens and Phil Hey from Central Coast CC was closed down by Ben Massa and Matthew Brown, also from Central Coast CC. There's certainly no love lost between clubmates when an individual championship is on the line. The bunch stayed together after they regrouped and the result was decided in a very close finish between Elliot and Andrew. Elliot had just enough strength to throw his bike that extra inch further than Andrew at the finish to take the honours.

In C Grade Peter Krauss made a solid solo effort and looked to be cruising to an easy win before puncturing and losing any chance of taking the gold. The rest of the bunch stayed together and fought out an exciting bunch sprint at the finish, with Brett Hall from Kooragang Open CC taking the honours.

D Grade was a very civilised affair with the bunch staying together for the duration. In the end it was a battle of the fittest to decide the placings and Paul Anderson t from Kooragang Open CC took the honours.

It was a very different story in E grade with first time (ever!) racer Carl Leonard from Hunter Districts waltzing away with the win. His solo time of 1:26:00 was almost 40 seconds faster than the D Grade bunch's time, so he's earned himself both a championship and a very healthy regrade for the next event at Kooragang.

F Grade was severely under-subscribed with regulars like George Probert and Al Provost going MIA. In the end it was young Tegan Hunt who took the honours - but only just. In the closing stages she complained of lower back pain and her pace slowed considerably. The handy little lead that she had built up kept her just far enough in front for her to take the win.

Thanks to all the riders who took part today, and congratulations to all the winners and grinners. Looking forward to seeing a HUGE field at Kooragang in August. There will be plenty of grade adjustments for the next race, so please make sure you check the grades pages on Tuesday to find out where you'll be racing.

What a fantastic day for racing, and there was plenty of fantastic racing to be had in all grades at Minmi today.

First to finish were the combined U15's and U17's who were absolutely flying. The lead group of six stayed together until the last 100m when Sam Wellbourne jumped out and used his strength to beat David Walsh and Matthew Barter home in a close finish.

In F Grade it was all Sandra Notley who lead from go to woe and has earned a promotion to E Grade for her outstanding efforts. She even had time to smile and wave on the last lap, so look out E Grade.

E Grade was a fairly gentlemanly affair with the pack staying together until the run into the sprint. Mark Murray was simply too strong on the day and pipped Ray Millis and Brian Brown on the line.

A BIG bunch finish in D Grade was probably the most exciting of the day, with John Hodgetts using brute stength to hold off challenges from left, right and centre.

It's not often you see Steve Chapman out-dragged in a sprint, but today it happened in C Grade with Matty Augutis from Cessnock coming over the top of Steve in the last 40m. Maurice Mathe was outstanding in picking up third against plenty of younger rivals.

B is for Breakaway and that's exactly what happened in B Grade today: time after time. In the end every break was mown down allowing Matthew Smith to drive home easily to street the rest of the field. B is also for Blood: Craig Rosevear had a momentary lapse of concentration and fell on a ridge of pavement, losing bark and blood as a result. He'll have some nice bruises to show for it in a day or two.

It was the Phil Thuaux show in A Grade, with excellent support from Scott Lindsay, Matthew Johns and John Millington who forged a 20km breakaway that lasted until the final drive when Phil strolled away for the win from Scott Lindsay and a tiring Mathew Johns.

We're back at Minmi next month for the Teams Time Trial. There'll be one or two grade changes based on today's results. The revised grades will be posted on Monday 14 April so riders can organise their teams. See you then.
